The Colorado Avalanche are a professional ice hockey team based in Denver, Colorado, United States. They are members of the Northwest Division of the Western Conference of the National Hockey League (NHL). They have won two NHL Championships in 1996 and 2001. They were originally founded in 1972 at the Quebec Nordiques of the WHA. They began competing in the NHL in 1979. The franchise was moved to Colorado in 1995 and renamed the Avalache.
