Berkeley Symphony Concert III: The Illuminators
Andreia Pinto-Correia’s new work is a charming depiction of her native Lisbon. Similarly, Rachmaninoff’s Symphonic Dances indulges the composer’s poignant nostalgia for Russia in an orchestral suite that combines vivacious rhythms with lush melodies. Lutosławski’s unconventional Cello Concerto, featuring the two-time Grammy winner and internationally renowned cellist Lynn Harrell, redefines the idea of a concerto—a pouncing, insistent orchestra and a rebellious, mocking cello.

Berkeley Symphony was founded in 1969 as the Berkeley Promenade Orchestra by Thomas Rarick, a young protégé of Sir Adrian Boult, the great English maestro. Reflecting the spirit of the times, the Promenade replaced tuxedos with informal street dress and performed in unusual locations, including the University Art Museum....
